Are boat steering wheels universal? Can I change the one I have for something I buy at an autoparts store?
My steering wheel on my boat is completley rusted. It looks like a classic Grant 13" steering wheel (it's not a grant it just looks like one). First off the steering wheel is to small and hard to turn. Second it just doesn't look good. So I want to see if I just pick one up at an auto parts store or off the internet from a boating store.
Unless you intend on replacing your entire steering system, you need to get one that matches your helm. A Mustang steering wheel will not fit a Teleflex helm. There is a big difference between the steering column on a car and a helm on a boat. If you try to adapt one, you will be making a big mistake that you will realize when you least want to, like coming into a dock and finding that your turning the wheel and the boat isn't steering

boating in sardinia whats possible?
I am thinking of having a trip on a 35" boat that is stored in Sardinia. What are the boating options around there? Is it possible and desirable in that size boat to go from Sardinia accross to mainland Italy?
I am thinking of having a trip on a 36 foot unseeker rapallo boat that is stored in Sardinia. What are the boating options around there? Is it possible and desirable in that size boat to go from Sardinia across to mainland Italy?
I just want to work out how hard it is to get to mainland.
Honestly, I don't know if I'd even consider going anywhere in a 35 inch boat. I think it might be just a little too small for any wind on the water and the accommodations would be a little tight for most humans.
However, it's about 200 nautical miles due east to reach the mainland. If the seas are calm you should be able to make the trip if the fuel economy allows it. Course you could go north to Corsica, refuel and then head towards Italy and down the cost where the trip across the Med would be shorter.
ADDED COMMENT: 200 nautical miles is equivalent to 230 miles. The Rappalo carries 200 gallons of fuel. You would probably be travelling at 25 – 30 mph and burning approx 25-30 gal/hour. It would take you 7.5 – 9 hours to cross. At 25 gals per hour that would mean 187.5 gallons consumed and at 30 mph you'd burn 270 and this exceeds the 200 gallons the boat carries. Even at 187.5 gal used you would be pushing the safety envelope big time and not have much in reserve if you ran into foul weather.
Go north and then cut over…far safer!

I let someone store their boat on my prop. a yr ago and haven't heard from them since, what can i do?
If I wanted to register it in my name not knowing where the owner is how do i go about doing this?
Attempt to contact the owner, IN WRITING. Give them 30 to 60 days to pick it up or make other arrangements and then begin abandonment.
You must make every, honest effort to contact the owner.
Do you have a contract that lays out this procedure?
Check with the sheriff or a clerk of court on how to proceed next.

Why can they store junk cars, truck, boats, on front lawns & in street in Lompoc CA never moving them in years?
There are so many front lawns in Lompoc CA with tons of junk cars, trucks, boats, campers, trailers, and in the street also that never move, have body damage, and the cops and city refuse to do anything about it.
Is there a city ordinance forbidding the junk cars? If not perhaps you could lobby for an ordinance at City Council.

Do I need to winterize my boat in the fall?
I live in a warm weather climate that rarely drops below freezing, and the boat is stored in the garage. The coldest I've ever seen it in the garage is about 55 degrees.
Its a Mercury outboard
If you think of what most people call winterization, the Instruction Manual actually calls it a "Storage Procedure". If your not going to use the boat for 3 months or more, you need to fog the engine, and do annual maintenance in the engine. Due to the recent changes to fuels they don't store as well as they did just a couple year ago. You need to keep your fuel fresh, and don't store it for over 30 days. That includes fuel in the carb. With some of today's engines, like DFI and VOR etc. you might need to check the instructions on how best to store the engine.

biggest boat & fishing store in miami?
is as big as a costco and they sell everything from boats , fishing supplies , everything you can think off in the outdoors.
I've been to the Bass Pro shops in Dania Beach. That's still a little bit north of Hollywood. That's a pretty big store there.

Where can I store my boat on it's trailer cheap and secure?
I need a cheap compound/marina with use of slipway as I might want to take the boat out in the summer, south east, south coats Essex Kent
There are a lots of big marinas on the net but thought a small private cheap local place might not advertise
I've got a big field you can use on the other side of the pond- Maine, that you can use. Great islands in the large bay to explore/camp on during the summer.

Can varnish be used to protect cheap boats from rot?
I'm trying to build an extremely small cheap plywood boat and because of this I don't want to spend too much money on something to keep it rot-free. Can you use varnish from a hardware store for a cheap boat (needs to last only 1 or more years) to protect it from rotting out and uv rays and such.
also if using commercial varnish how many coats should be used
Pretty much anything is always better than nothing.
With varnish you keep putting it on until you get the finish you are after, at least four coats or more, rubbing down between coats. The directions on the tin are probably correct….
I have used house paint and all sorts of stuff over the years for tenders and such that are not in the water all the time.
The real issue is to keep the water out of the timber – it's all personal preference after that!
Good luck.
