Women and children first,,, is this still applied to modern day disasters like airplane/boat/etc accidents?
or is this something that has also changed these days?
a few guy friends were arguing that since we are "equal", this shouldn't be applied because it isn't fair
opinions?
Dunno about boats and ships but I think if there was time ships would probably send kids off to the lifeboats with their mothers first – sounds sensible to me.
Commercial aircraft evacuation wouldn't do that because they have to evacuate within 90 seconds and it would be too confusing to separate people into groups.
EDIT TO POSTER ABOVE: I doubt very much if any aircraft evacuation has ever evacuated women and children first. Ever.
UPDATE: The Hudson river plane was floating and relatively safe and stable. So they probably made on over-riding decision to let kids and mothers out first. Silly if you ask me because all the shuffling about in the aisle would have delayed the evacuation.
I suspect what they actually mean is that they allowed women and children to board the rafts first – which is different because the evacuation had already taken place and the passengers were on the wings.
Under ordinary circumstances planes are evacuated for fear of swiftly spreading fire and/or explosion and men, women and children are evacuated as they get to the emergency exit and no one group is given priority.
TO IBLOCK: I have researched this topic and in fact you will find they did not evacuate women and children first from the Hudson River plane. People were evacuated off the aircraft as they got to the exit. It would be completely absurd to expect people to stand aside and wait so ladies and children could shuffle up to the exit first.
LOL
Sorry hun.
Toodles.
